The Hebrew imperative verb "VeAhavta" (
)
is contained in the Torah (part of the Hebrew Scriptures); in English, it means "You shall love." VeAhavta is part of the commandment
from which stems the so-called "Golden Rule" – a
teaching that is contained, in one form or another, in all of
the major religions of the world.
Our
organization is named "VeAhavta" because the
word expresses our obligation, indeed our privilege, to care
for others who are in need – whoever they are and wherever
we may find them – regardless of race, ethnicity, religion,
creed, nationality or socio-economic status. With increasing
economic interdependence and developments in technology that
have continued to advance globalization, we can no longer in
good conscience remain indifferent to people in Africa, Asia,
Eastern Europe or in Central and South America.
We must regard
the impoverished, suffering people who live in developing countries
as our neighbors, too. We read about them in our newspapers,
we see them on our television screens and we are aware of their
common plight. To love God necessarily implies that we love our
neighbor, and loving our neighbor obligates us all to offer a
hand of loving kindness to everyone, whether they be friend or
foe, next-door or overseas, and particularly to the disenfranchised,
those who cannot help themselves.
Through VeAhavta, we seek to help repair the world by loving
our neighbors – locally and globally – by providing
people in needy communities with material and human resources
such that they may meet their basic needs for food, safe drinking
water, clothing, adequate shelter and education.
But more than just providing the material resources that our
neighbors so desperately need, we encourage others to get personally
involved in the plight of the needy. Love requires that we give
more than just our possessions; it requires an investment of
the heart for which there are no shortages of investment opportunities
in the world today.
The
founders of VeAhavta realize that repairing the world and ridding
it of sorrow is a difficult – some would say impossible – task.
Nevertheless, we feel that doing something, no matter how insignificant
it may seem to be to some, will mean so much more to those we
are able to help and is, of course, far better than remaining
passive. We recognize that our efforts will have limitations
and we have, therefore, envisioned a non-profit organization
that capitalizes on human and material resources in unconventional
ways in order to maximize the positive impact that these limited
resources will have.
VeAhavta is a 501(c)(3) charity registered with the IRS and the
State of California. We are primarily a volunteer organization.
All of our Directors serve without compensation and we have only
one paid employee.
VeAhavta is an interfaith organization. Click

At present, we are working to fulfill our charitable purposes
through the following two theaters of activity:
| |
-
The Sri Lanka Orphans & Widows
Project: Through several different programs administered
through our “Grace Care Center” in Trincomalee,
Sri Lanka, VeAhavta is providing needy children, widows
and elders with their basic needs.
-
Speaking Itineraries:
VeAhavta arranges speaking itineraries in North America
that are designed to heighten awareness of the problems
faced by needy communities and to discover the methods
and means to solve or mitigate those problems.

and in helping people in "developed countries" to
recognize that the "plight of the needy" is also
our own.
